From Conflict to Cooperation: Four Villages Find Peace

Invited by Inter-Peace, TECBO's Zahara Bashir presented a documentary showing how she personally reconciled two warring clans on her Yabicho farm. The four villages — locked in a dispute over water and natural resources — agreed to share, inspired by what they saw.

"Tumaini" is Swahili for hope and optimism for a good future — the perfect name for an organisation doing exactly that in Mandera since 2022.

Mission: To provide a nurturing, inclusive environment for community empowerment.

2022 — Founded

TECBO is Born

Zahara Bashir establishes TECBO in Rhamu, Mandera. Within months, she is appointed to the Mandera County Early Childhood Development & Vocational Education Taskforce by the Governor.

May–August 2023

Joining Mandera's Peace Table

TECBO officially joins the Mandera Peace Actors Forum, establishing partnerships with Inter-Peace and other key peacebuilding organisations.

September 2023

Girls' Mentorship & Climate Action

Big Sister, Little Sister mentorship programme reaches 30+ girls. TECBO participates in the African Climate Summit and delivers Climate Action talks to 50 Yabicho Farm beneficiaries.

October 2023

On International Day of the Girl Child, TECBO and Al Ansar Welfare reach 440 girls across five schools with menstrual health education and empowerment sessions.

Transformative Education

TECBO believes every learner in Mandera deserves access to quality, empowering education. We work at every level — from national policy to the classroom.

County Education Taskforce: Zahara Bashir appointed by the Governor to shape Mandera's education reforms. The Taskforce Report was delivered to the National Cabinet Secretary in Oct 2023.

Matarajio Academy: Staff trained on the interconnectedness of education, peace, climate, health & gender inclusion.

KCSE Mentorship: Academic integrity and exam technique talks for candidates at Khadija Girls Day Secondary School.

Girl Retention Programme: Targeted interventions including mentorship, school supplies, and community engagement to keep adolescent girls in school.

Peacebuilding & Coexistence

In Mandera — a region marked by complex inter-community tensions — TECBO builds bridges through dialogue, mediation, and storytelling.

Inter-Peace Working Group: Zahara Bashir facilitated a landmark dialogue that ended a water-sharing dispute between four villages (Towsi, Mubarak, Jabi 1 & 2) using her own Yabicho farm reconciliation documentary.

Peace Actors Forum: Active member since May 2023 — participating in monthly coordination meetings in Mandera.

Mass Dialogue: Facilitated separate peace dialogues for 50 women, religious leaders, and 50 youths (Oct 2023).

Cross-Border Resilience: CBCR/RACIDA project identifying root causes of conflict across Rhamu, Rhamu Dimtu, Sathe and Rama, Ethiopia.

Girls' Empowerment & Health

At the heart of TECBO's work is a deep commitment to girls and women — their education, health, safety, and self-belief.

Big Sister, Little Sister Mentorship: Mentored 30+ girls aged 13–17 (Aug 2023) and girls aged 18–25 (Sept 2023). Topics include adolescence, confidence, education, and life skills.

International Day of the Girl Child: Reached 440 girls across 5 schools with menstrual hygiene education and sanitary pad distribution, partnering with Al Ansar Welfare.

Rhamu D.E.B Primary Peace Talks: Inner peace and wellbeing sessions for Class 8 and Grade 6 girls.

Breastfeeding Awareness: Maternal health and breastfeeding best practices delivered with Raising Youth & Communities (RYC).

Environment & Climate Resilience

Mandera is on the frontline of climate change — TECBO responds with practical action, advocacy, and community education.

Dariqa Borehole: TECBO lobbied for and secured a borehole at Dariqa, Girissa location — officially commissioned by Amb. Fouzia Abass — now providing clean water to 6,000+ people.

Greening Projects: Active greening project at Darusalam village and an integrated farm at Dariqa, targeting 20% vegetation cover in Mandera.

Climate Action Talks: TECBO delivered climate talks to 50 Yabicho Farm beneficiaries and participated in the 2023 African Climate Summit.

Water & Drought Education: Community sessions on sustainable water management, drought-resistant crops, and eco-friendly practices.

Women's Peace Caavan: Facilitated women-only peace dialogue for 30 women (Feb 2024, Teso Ramu), addressing security and community safety needs.

International Women's Day 2024: Hosted empowering workshops at Dariqa recognising women's achievements and advocating for gender equality.

Yabicho Farm Project: Zahara Bashir's own farm serves as a living model of reconciliation and sustainable agriculture.

Executive Founder & Director

Zahara Bashir founded TECBO in 2022 with a clear vision: to bring hope — Tumaini — to the communities of Rhamu, Mandera. In just three years, she has been appointed to the Mandera County Education Taskforce by the Governor, resolved inter-clan conflicts through the power of storytelling, facilitated peace for hundreds of community members with Inter-Peace, and successfully advocated for a borehole that now provides clean water to over 6,000 people. She was recognised at the International Women's Day 2024 celebrations for her efforts in transforming lives.
